Because tariffs don’t work like dreams. They work like clocks. They tick. They delay. They slow the system until the capital flows elsewhere—always elsewhere—and the labourer is left standing in a shuttered town with rusted tools and a flag pinned to his collar. He can’t afford to leave. He can’t afford to stay. His mortgage rises with inflation. His groceries rise with shipping costs. And the men who sold him this policy? They’ve already exited. They cashed out. They’re on to the next thing. The next tweet. The next SPAC.

So here it is, the final paradox. The poor buy into the system designed to consume them. They believe in the strongman who promises them pain with purpose. They vote for the con. They invest in loss. They shoulder a tax disguised as patriotism and wonder why they can't breathe.

And the rich? They don’t wonder. They already know.

They drink champagne on the other side of the tariff wall, where the air is filtered and the cost is amortised.

They didn’t pay the tax.

You did.
