👉In reinforced concrete (RCC) slabs, steel bars are arranged to resist bending and control cracking.

🚧The main types of bars used are main bars, top bars, and distribution bars.

💫1. Main Bars (Primary Reinforcement)

⭐️Purpose

⏺Resist the main bending (tensile) stress in the slab.
⏺Carry most of the load.

📍Location

⏺Placed at the bottom of the slab in simply supported slabs.
⏺Placed at the top of the slab over continuous supports (negative moment zone).

🎲Direction

⏺Run in the shorter span direction (because bending is greater in the shorter span).

🏷Example

⏺In a one-way slab spanning along the short direction, main bars run parallel to the short span.

💫2. Top Bars (Negative Moment Bars)

⭐️Purpose

⏺Resist negative bending moments over supports.
⏺Prevent cracking at the top surface of the slab near beams/walls.

📍Location

⏺Placed at the top of the slab over supports.
⏺Extended some distance into the span as per design.

🔰Used In

⏺Continuous slabs
⏺Cantilever slabs
⏺Slabs monolithic with beams

💫3. Distribution Bars (Secondary Reinforcement)

⭐️Purpose

⏺Distribute load to main bars.
Control shrinkage and temperature cracks.
⏺Hold main bars in position during concreting.

📍Location

⏺Placed above or below depending on slab type.
⏺Usually at the bottom in simply supported slabs.

🔰Direction

⏺Run in the longer span direction, perpendicular to main bars.

❇️Spacing

⏺Smaller diameter, closer spacing than main bars.
