What is the only structure of government that ensures liberty by making the accumulation of power impossible?
There isn’t one.
That’s the joke. Power isn’t something you "structure" out of existence, like some architect designing a house where the wolves don’t get in. The wolves live inside. Every system, every grand theory of governance, every noble attempt to "balance" authority—it all ends the same way. Power concentrates. Always. It doesn’t disappear, it doesn’t spread out evenly like some egalitarian fantasy, and it sure as hell doesn’t stay in its cage.
The Iroquois thought they could keep it in check with tradition, with honor, with a council that talked until men were too exhausted to fight. The Articles of Confederation thought they could starve it, scatter it across thirteen bickering states until it had nowhere to grow. The Founders? They at least knew the truth. They didn't try to destroy power, just made it fight itself. Three branches, opposing interests, each clawing at the other’s throat so no one got too strong. It wasn’t about liberty. It was about survival.
Mearsheimer would tell you straight: states act in their own interests, and so do men. They don’t "govern" out of benevolence. They take what they can, consolidate, expand. The Constitution isn’t some holy document of freedom—it’s a compromise between people who wanted to rule and people who didn’t want to be ruled. A functional system isn’t one where power is eliminated. That’s utopian garbage. A functional system is one where power is so entangled in itself that no single bastard can grab it all.
But even that is temporary. Because in the end, power wins.
It always does.
Power isn’t shifting back to the people.
That’s the lie they sell you when the gears are already turning in the other direction. Old structures don’t collapse because people "take back" power. They collapse because new predators are already carving up the carcass. There’s no golden age of liberty waiting on the other side of the rubble, just another set of bastards ready to take their turn at the wheel.
Power struggles from within?
Sure.
That’s how it always works. The fight isn’t between "the people" and the system—it’s between those inside the system who want a bigger slice. The people? They watch, they cheer, they get crushed between the gears. It’s not a matter of time. It’s a matter of who gets to the top first.
