Not so surprising
I wasn’t surprised either. When I lived in Idaho, I always felt safe and never had a problem going out at night alone. Now that I live in Vienna, I never go out alone after it gets dark.

I’m assuming Western Europe.
I live and work in Stuttgart Germany. While I would say things are different than 10 years ago, I don’t think that poll is true for here. IMHO

In this case, does European mean countries in the European Union or does it mean Europe in general. I would put a lot of money on this that it doesn't include most of Eastern Europe and Russia despite everything Russia is accused of in the West, they are still a lot more stable than most of Western Europe and North America

The young today appear to be very fearful. This may be due to their having been so shielded from danger. Past generations experienced danger from childhood producing a somewhat more steely character in those who survived. Those who did not survive do not speak.

Physical safety can mean a lot of things. I'm fairly sure you're supposed to think exclusively of Covid here, but I'm not convinced their concerns are that narrow.
