Here’s where I’m coming from with Mahmoud Khalil.
I spent a decade in progressive politics, and I got into it for healthcare policy and economic policy.
Over the decade, I saw certain ideas start to infiltrate the movement. The pretext was being anti war. The subtext was being anti-United States.
The thing that always confused me was the bizarre fascination with Islam. A lot of focus on leaving Iran alone and Freeing Palestine. A lot of criticism of Obama’s efforts against ISIS, which I always thought were one of the national security highlights of his presidency. And sometimes she would look into some of the people spreading these ideas and yeah, it came from a lot of institutions that require Middle Eastern funding.
The moment I realized progressives were fucked wasn’t just October 7. It was the Women’s March and seeing the leadership flat out align with antisemitism.
I watched these ideas accelerate the radicalism that destroyed my movement of a decade. There is no future where we get single payer healthcare in the United States via progressives in my estimation. Too many of the people in that movement are not pro progressive policy. They are anti-United States.
Really imagine spending a decade of your life working on something and seeing radicalism destroy it. I could’ve been working on a lot of things for the last 10 years like video games.
So I have seen firsthand how convincing people their own country is the enemy can break things I love.
I see what happened at Columbia through that lens. You have people coming into the United States, inculcating college students into extremist views and breaking our institutions.
During the 2016 Trump resistance, we talked a lot about information warfare. And that’s probably more comfortable for Democrats to think about when it’s accusations about Russia, compromising Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
But in my estimation, there’s another information war going on that Democrats are uniquely susceptible to. And it’s this idea of blindly praising all multiculturalism and turning a blind eye to people here trying to hurt our country.
I don’t understand why Democrats don’t see these domestic terror attack attacks in Germany, and realize this could be our future if we don’t think through the people we are letting in the door. Antisemitism has shaped a hell of a lot of human history.
