a- The upper part of the rectum is dilated and called ampulla of the rectum.

b- Middle 1/3 is covered on its front and sides by peritoneum.

c- The lower 1/3 of the anterior surface of the rectum is covered by peritoneum.

d- The rectum is about 12 cm long.
