📅 CRITICAL PATH METHOD (CPM) — HOW TO PLAN A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

The Critical Path Method is a project scheduling technique used to identify the sequence of activities that determines the earliest possible project completion date.

🔹 How Does It Work?

1️⃣ List the project activities.

2️⃣ Estimate the duration of each activity.

3️⃣ Identify dependencies between activities.

4️⃣ Arrange the activities in a logical sequence.

5️⃣ Calculate the earliest and latest activity times.

6️⃣ Identify the critical path and monitor its activities.

🏗️ Example: Building Construction

A simplified sequence might include:
Site preparation → Excavation → Foundation works → Structural frame → Building envelope → Finishes.
Some activities can overlap, while others depend on earlier work being completed.

🔹 Why Is CPM Useful?

✅ Identifies activities with little or no scheduling flexibility.

✅ Helps prioritize resources.

✅ Supports delay analysis.

✅ Improves progress monitoring.

✅ Helps teams evaluate schedule changes.

📌 Activities on the critical path generally have zero total float under the schedule's calculated conditions. Changes in dependencies or durations can change the critical path.
