You brought up a great point. I don't think the actors or the showrunners were even fans of Tolkien in the first place.
It would seem to me that they "Loved Lord of the Rings" in the essence that they see it only as a wildly successful fantasy world that garnered the attention of Fantasy and non-fantasy fans alike. They saw this as an opportunity to attach their names to a world that they have no respect or appreciation for in a money-grabbing attempt at fame.
They see LOTR as a "Cool fantasy action story" rather than a cultural phenomenon and it shows.
