👉Site Engineer’s responsibilities during the
construction of Reinforced Concrete slabs — step by step, from preparation to completion:
🧱 1. Pre-Construction ResponsibilitiesBefore slab work starts, the site engineer must:
⏺Check drawings and specifications: Review structural and architectural drawings (reinforcement details, slab thickness, beam layout, and column locations).
⏺Verify formwork setup: Ensure the formwork/shuttering is correctly placed, level, and properly supported to prevent sagging or deflection.
⏺Confirm materials: Check the quality of cement, aggregates, water, and reinforcement bars according to standards.
⏺Ensure correct cover: Verify that proper cover blocks are provided for top and bottom reinforcement as per design.
⏺Inspect services layout: Coordinate with electrical and plumbing teams so conduits and pipes are placed before concreting.
🔩 2. Reinforcement Work SupervisionCheck bar bending schedule (BBS): ⏺Ensure bars are cut, bent, and placed as per approved BBS.
⏺Rebar placement: Confirm correct spacing, overlap (lapping length), anchorage, and alignment of top and bottom meshes.
⏺Support and chairs: Verify that proper spacers and chairs are provided to maintain reinforcement position.
⏺Inspection before concreting: Ensure all reinforcement and embedded items (pipes, sleeves, inserts) are inspected and approved by the structural engineer or consultant.
🧰 3. Formwork & Level Control⏺Form alignment: Confirm formwork is tight, clean, and oiled to prevent leakage.
⏺Level and slope: Use leveling instruments to ensure the slab surface will be even and at correct height.
⏺Joint sealing: Check joints in shuttering to avoid cement slurry leakage during pouring.
🧪 4. Concreting Work⏺Mix verification: Ensure the concrete mix ratio and slump meet the approved design (trial mix results).
⏺Pouring supervision: Oversee concrete pouring in layers and prevent segregation.
⏺Vibration: Ensure proper compaction with mechanical vibrators to avoid honeycombing or voids.
⏺Curing compound (if used): Ensure correct application for flat slabs, especially in large surface areas.
💧 5. Curing and Finishing⏺Curing: Ensure continuous curing for at least 7–21 days (depending on cement type) using water ponding or wet coverings & Admixtures.
⏺Surface finishing: Check for surface smoothness, slopes (if any), and cracks after curing starts.
⏺Remove formwork: Only after achieving sufficient strength (as per engineer’s direction).
🧾 6. Documentation and Quality Control⏺Maintain
daily site records, concrete cube test reports, and pour cards.
⏺Record
slump test results, concrete delivery times, and curing logs.
⏺Prepare
as-built reports and update
site diary regularly.
🧍♂️ 7. Safety Responsibilities⏺Ensure
workers wear PPEs (helmets, gloves, boots).
⏺Check
formwork safety before pouring.
⏺Prevent overloading on slab before achieving full strength.
