🌉 HOW ARE BRIDGE PIERS BUILT UNDERWATER? – 6 KEY STEPS
Bridge piers are constructed to support bridges over rivers, lakes and other water bodies. Special foundation techniques are used to ensure stability and durability.
🏗️ CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
1️⃣ Site Preparation: Inspect the riverbed and prepare the construction area.
2️⃣ Cofferdam Installation: Install temporary steel sheet piles around the foundation area.
3️⃣ Water Removal: Pump water out of the cofferdam to create a dry working space.
4️⃣ Pier Construction: Install reinforcement, formwork and pour concrete.
5️⃣ Cofferdam Removal: Remove the temporary enclosure after the structure is sufficiently stable.
6️⃣ Completed Pier: The finished pier transfers bridge loads safely to the foundation.
📌 IMPORTANT NOTE: Not all underwater bridge foundations use cofferdams. Depending on water depth and ground conditions, engineers may use drilled shafts, caissons or underwater concrete techniques.
