Former Cabinet Minister and former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has died following a road accident, according to reports.

Sources say Jirongo died at the scene after his car was involved in an accident with a passenger bus along the Nairobi Nakuru highway. The crash happened at about 3 am on Saturday as he was driving back to his home in Lugari.

Jirongo was 64. He served as Minister for Rural Development during the administration of former President Daniel arap Moi in 2002.

He also served as Lugari Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2002 and later from 2007 to 2013.

In the 2022 General Election, Jirongo ran for the Kakamega governor seat on a UDP ticket but lost to ODM candidate Fernandes Barasa.
