Possibly entirely unrelated I had an interesting and revealing conversation with a Muslim woman today at Watney Market. We were discussing going through customs. Now I was stopped once when on my travels because the x-ray of my suitcase aroused suspicions. This was in Taipei. My suitcase was the last to appear on the carousel. It was rammed full of about 80 pocket sized Mandarin New Testaments. On my way through 'Nothing to declare' I was called over. I was incredibly nervous about my Bible's being in a predominantly Buddhist country. I was agitated. A Christian from the plane - a God send - was with me because she had a driver willing to take me to my hotel waiting outside for us. I couldn't speak any of the language so relied on her interpretation of the customs officer. It only turned out that the Bible's showed up on the x-ray in the exact same way as illegal illicit drugs and they thought I was trafficking! Funny after the event. Anyway, we had our conversation about that and she went on to explain how her father had been bringing Islamic literature across a border control and because this Muslim author had been banned across the world (!) he had them confiscated and these books were forbidden entry into the UK! She seemed baffled about why that should be so I asked her whether he was an extremist and she just said "no he was just like any of us"! I answered "Well perhaps the books were about Shari'a law." She looked vacantly at me so I went on to say, "Do you you agree with Shari'a law? Because a lot of us don't." More vacant looks! All this went on in the Wimpy with lots of people around including Muslim staff (one of whom I've been praying and Evangelising for ages! In fact I gave her a copy of Dear Abdullah because she's such a sweetheart with a kind heart. They all are in there so I was glad they could hear this conversation too!) no cross words or hostilities whatsoever. It was just fascinating to see her confused about what could have been wrong with the books that the world had banned and great to see her face when I shared my funny Bible 'trafficking' story. What an interesting comparison. The Taiwanese authorities had absolutely no problem letting me into Taiwan with those Testaments which was a massive relief for me as you can imagine. I really thought I was for the high jump!🤣
