👉Strength of Steel – Buckling Load of Steel Column (Euler's Formula)

🚧This illustration explains how to calculate the critical buckling load (Pcr) of a steel column using Euler's Buckling Formula.

💫A solid steel column with a cross-section of 150 mm × 150 mm, a length of 3 m, and both ends fixed (K = 0.5) is analyzed.

🏷The moment of inertia is first calculated, followed by the effective length, and finally the critical buckling load.

⏺Given:

Column Size = 150 mm × 150 mm

Length = 3000 mm (3 m)

End Condition = Both Ends Fixed (K = 0.5)

Modulus of Elasticity (E) = 200,000 N/mm²

❇️Calculated Results:

Moment of Inertia (I) = 42.19 × 10⁶ mm⁴

Effective Length (Le) = 1500 mm

Critical Buckling Load (Pcr) = 37,000 kN

⏯Important Note: Euler's formula is applicable only to long, slender columns where buckling occurs before material crushing.

🔑Always use the correct effective length factor (K) based on the column's end conditions for accurate design.
