🏗️ STRUCTURAL LOAD PATH — HOW DO BUILDING LOADS REACH THE GROUND?

A structural load path describes how loads travel through structural elements and connections until they are transferred safely to the supporting ground.

Understanding the load path is fundamental to structural design and construction.

🔹 Simplified Gravity Load Path

Slab → Beam → Column → Foundation → Soil

In this example:

1️⃣ The slab receives floor loads.

2️⃣ Beams receive loads from the slab and other supported elements.

3️⃣ Columns transfer loads toward the foundations.

4️⃣ Foundations distribute the loads to the soil.

Actual load paths depend on the structural system, and some buildings use load-bearing walls or other arrangements.

🔹 What About Lateral Loads?

Wind and earthquake forces may be resisted by structural systems such as shear walls, braced frames, or moment-resisting frames.

These systems transfer lateral forces through connected structural elements to the foundation.

📌 Why Is This Important on Site?

✅ Helps engineers understand structural connections.

✅ Supports proper reinforcement detailing.

✅ Helps identify potentially serious design discrepancies.

✅ Explains why unauthorized removal or alteration of structural elements can be dangerous.

⚠️ Never cut, remove, or modify a structural element without appropriate engineering assessment and authorization.
