Q: Reaching the spiritual state you are describing is extremely difficult and could even be said to be impossible, especially if you are suggesting we reach that state all at once. Isn’t it the usual experience for a human being to get confronted with a depressing dead end in regards to what you are talking about? Yes, we have somehow deceived ourselves, and we have kept ourselves busy with things that we thought were right. Perhaps we feel living with the “I” is aggravating, yet on the other hand letting go of it is very difficult.
A: First of all, letting go of the “I” is not difficult; however it is scary. Secondly, what exactly are you referring to that gets the human being into a depressing dead end? If you have seen deeply that the “I” you have called yourself is a foreign phenomenon, then you should begin to feel freer and more comfortable than before.
Suppose somebody insults you, and then you immediately feel sad, disappointed, and inferior. Now, if you understand that the insult is pointed at a foreign entity in your being and not your true self, do you still feel inferior, disappointed, and sad?
Let’s say, you tell me that what I talk about is nonsense, and I feel uncomfortable because of your comment. The next moment you tell me that what I talk about is good and makes sense to you, and I feel happy. Therefore, like a flattered beggar I would look to see what kind of judgment you might make about me next, and what you might take away from or add to my identity.
Now, if I realize that neither your insult nor your praise has a correct basis (because they are formed by your own mental criteria) and that your insult and your praise are pointed at a delusive “I,” meaning pointed at a being that does not have authenticity and is an abusive phenomenon, then wouldn't I feel more comfortable? Wouldn't my fear, anxiety, and dependency, and many other problems as well, disappear in relation to you?
