👉A Mat Foundation, also commonly known as a Raft Foundation, is a type of shallow foundation used in Building Construction engineering.
💫It is essentially a large, continuous, reinforced concrete slab that supports multiple columns and walls, effectively acting as a single, rigid base for the entire structure.
🏗️ Key Characteristics and Purpose
* Load Distribution: The primary function of a mat foundation is to spread the entire load of the building over a very large area of the soil beneath the structure (the whole footprint or a significant portion of it).
* Reduced Pressure: By distributing the load over a wider area, the pressure exerted on the soil (contact pressure) is significantly reduced.
* Mitigating Settlement: This reduction in pressure is crucial for minimizing the risk of differential settlement—uneven sinking of the foundation—which can damage the structure.
📍 When is a Mat Foundation Used?
⏺Mat foundations are typically chosen for construction projects under the following conditions:-
* Low Soil Bearing Capacity: When the soil has a low safe bearing capacity, and traditional individual footings (spread footings) would be too large and cover more than 50% of the building's area.
* Heavy Loads: For high-rise buildings, industrial facilities, silos, or other structures with very heavy structural loads.
* Variable or Weak Soil: When the soil conditions are highly variable, weak, or prone to settlement.
* Basement Floors: They can often serve the dual purpose of being the foundation and the basement floor.
🧱 Common Types of Mat Foundations
⏺Mat foundations can be designed in several ways depending on the load and soil requirements:-
* Flat Plate Mat: A simple concrete slab of uniform thickness, suitable for buildings with relatively light and evenly distributed loads.
* Plate Thickened Under Columns (or with Pedestals): The slab is made thicker directly underneath the columns to handle concentrated heavy loads more effectively and resist punching shear.
* Two-Way Beam and Slab Raft: This design integrates beams with the slab, adding stiffness and improving load distribution, especially for buildings with large column spacing or very heavy loads.
* Piled Raft: Used in conditions with extremely weak or highly compressible soil and a high water table.
⏺The mat slab is supported by a system of deep piles, with the piles carrying a portion of the load and the mat distributing the rest.
