📐BBS Formulas & Calculations Every Civil Engineer Should Know
Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) is essential for accurate reinforcement cutting, quantity estimation, and reducing steel wastage on site.
Here are some important formulas used for calculating cutting lengths and chair bars:
1️⃣ Crank Bar Cutting Length
CL = L1 + (L2 / cos θ) + L3 + Required Hooks/Anchorage
Use the actual crank angle for accurate cutting length calculations.
2️⃣ L-Bar Cutting Length
CL = L1 + L2 + Hook Lengths − Bend Deductions
Always consider clear lengths, hooks, and standard bend deductions.
3️⃣ U-Bar Cutting Length
CL = L1 + Lb + L2 + Hook Lengths − Bend Deductions
Include both 90° bends and deduct the applicable bend allowances.
4️⃣ Chair Bar Quantity
No. of Chairs = (Total Length / Spacing) + 1
Provide extra chairs at the start and end where required.
5️⃣ Chair Bar Cutting Length
CL = a + 2h + b − Bend Deductions
Where a = top width, b = bottom width, and h = chair height.
📌 Standard 90° Bend Deductions:
• 6–12 mm bar = 2d
• 16–20 mm bar = 3d
• 25–32 mm bar = 4d
• 40 mm & above = 5d
🔧 Hook Guidelines:
• 90° Hook Extension = 9d
• 135° Hook Extension = 12d
(d = bar diameter; always verify applicable code and project drawings.)
Accurate BBS means accurate cutting, less steel wastage, better cost control, and efficient construction work.
