🏗️DRAINAGE ENGINEERING — THE SYSTEM BEHIND A SAFE PROJECT
A building can have a strong foundation, good concrete and excellent finishes—but poor drainage can gradually destroy the project.
💧 Why is drainage important?
Drainage is the planned collection, conveyance and safe disposal of stormwater and wastewater. Its purpose is not simply to “remove water,” but to control where water goes, how much flows, and how safely it is discharged.
🔹 1. Surface Drainage
Used to collect and convey rainfall from:
• Roads and paved areas
• Compounds and yards
• Roof surroundings
• Parking areas
• Open spaces
Typical components include:
➡️ Side drains
➡️ Gutters
➡️ Catch basins
➡️ Inlets
➡️ Culverts
🔹 2. Roof Drainage
Roof water must be collected and discharged away from the building.
Typical components:
➡️ Roof gutters
➡️ Downpipes
➡️ Outlets
➡️ Stormwater channels
⚠️ Common mistake: Discharging roof water directly beside the foundation.
🔹 3. Subsurface Drainage
Used where groundwater or seepage may affect foundations, basements or retaining structures.
Examples:
➡️ Perforated drain pipes
➡️ Filter layers
➡️ Drainage blankets
➡️ French drains
➡️ Sump and pumping systems
🔹 4. Road Drainage
A road without proper drainage can deteriorate rapidly.
The drainage system may include:
• Side drains
• Cross-drainage structures
• Culverts
• Catch pits
• Inlets
• Outfalls
🔹 5. The Critical Design Questions
Before designing a drainage system, ask:
1️⃣ How much water will reach the system?
2️⃣ What is the catchment area?
3️⃣ What rainfall intensity should be considered?
4️⃣ What slope is available?
5️⃣ What is the required hydraulic capacity?
6️⃣ Where will the water safely discharge?
7️⃣ What happens during extreme rainfall?
8️⃣ How will sediment, debris and maintenance be handled?
🚨 CASE STUDY CHALLENGE
A G+4 building in Addis Ababa has developed:
❌ Water ponding around the building
❌ Dampness inside the basement
❌ Soil erosion near the foundation
❌ Cracks appearing in external finishes
The contractor says:
“The problem is caused by heavy rainfall.”
But the engineer asks:
“Is the rainfall really the problem—or did we fail to manage the rainfall?”
💬 YOUR CHALLENGE:
What would you inspect FIRST?
A️⃣ Roof drainage
B️⃣ Surface slope around the building
C️⃣ Stormwater outlet
D️⃣ Foundation drainage
E️⃣ All of the above—but in a systematic sequence
👇 Comment your answer and explain WHY.
🏗️ Engineering principle:
Water should never be allowed to decide its own path around a building. The engineer must design the path.
