The plastic index is a term used in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering to describe the range of water content at which a soil can be plastic. It is a key parameter in classifying clay soils and understanding their behavior under different moisture conditions.

1. Definition of Plastic Index (PI)
The plastic index is defined as the **difference between the liquid limit (LL) and the plastic limit (PL) of a soil:

Liquid Limit (LL): The water content at which the soil changes from a liquid state to a plastic state. At this point, the soil can be molded but does not flow.Plastic Limit (PL): The water content at which the soil changes from a plastic state to a semi-solid state. At this point, the soil becomes too dry to be molded.
