👉What is a Column? (General Explanation)
📌A column is a vertical member and one of the most important structural elements in a building.
Its functions are:
📌To carry loads coming from the slab, beam, and upper floors
📌To transfer those loads down to the footing
📌To contribute to the stability and strength of the structure
🚧Materials Used to Make Columns
1️⃣ Reinforced Concrete Column (RCC)
Made from concrete + rebar (steel bars)
This is the most commonly used type in buildings.
2️⃣ Steel Column
Made from steel sections.
Used in high-rise buildings and industrial structures.
3️⃣ Timber/Wood Column
Made from wood and seen in traditional houses.
📐 Main Functions of a Column
📌Load carrying: It carries the loads from the structure above.
📌Transfer of load: It transfers the load directly to the foundation.
📌Stability: It prevents the building from collapsing or bending.
📌Supports beams & slabs: Beams rest on top of the column.
🧩 Parts of a Column
1. Longitudinal bars – The long steel bars inside the column.
2. Stirrups/Ties – The circular/closed bars that hold the longitudinal bars in place.
3. Concrete cover – The protective concrete surrounding the steel.
4. Footing connection – The point where the column is connected to the foundation.
🏗️ Where Are Columns Used?
📌Multi-storey buildings
📌Commercial buildings
📌Bridges (piers)
📌Warehouses
📌Churchs, Mosques, schools, offices, etc.
📚 Simple Example
🔗If the beam is like the arms, and the slab is the top surface,
the column is the legs of the building.
🔗If the legs become weak, the whole structure can collapse.
