So are there any crazy vets that might take out any of those police? And if that were to happen what would the Austrians think about that? Are the 40% doomed? Is there no recourse? What about the politicians implementing this? Are they subject to anyone going after them? Would that change things or opinions?

Well I would note all names of those police officers and sue them after. Every Politicians who agreed to this should be pulled to brick wall and shoted in head without any process. There will be Nuremberg v2 in future.
I'd no be surprised if that were the case, whether by design, or by opportunity, end result will be the same, only thing I'm not sure about, is how many folk will sit empty handed when the boots hit our doors, and how many won't.
