HORMONES & THEIR
FUNCTIONS
๐ฐ Growth Hormone (GH) Or Somatotropic Hormone (STH)
โโ Stimulates growth by stimulating protein synthesis.
๐ฐ Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
โโ Stimulates thyroid secretion.
๐ฐ Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
โโ Stimulates the production of of steroids by adrenal cortex.
๐ฐ GONADOTROPIC HORMONES
(i) Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
โโ Stimulates gamate, production, secration of sex hormones, development of follicles.
(ii) Interstitial Cell Stimulating Hormone( ICSH) or Luteinising Hormone (LH)
โโ stimulates the leydig cells of testis and induces secretion of testosterone. stimulates development of Corpus luteum and ovulation in female.
๐ฐ LUTEOTROPIC HORMONE ( LTH) or PROLACTIN
โโ Stimulates the growth of mammary glands, lactation and maintenance of Corpus luteum.
๐ฐ MELANOCYTE STIMULATING HORMONE(MSH)
โโ Controls dispersal of melanophores , in man it is doubtful.
๐ฐ OXYTOCIN
โโ stimulates secretion of milk from mammary glands ; causes contraction of uterus at the time of child birth.
๐ฐ ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE ADH (Vasopressin)
โโ Stimulates the nephrons for reabsorption of water.
Stimulates contraction of smooth muscles , blood vessels and causes rise in blood pressure.
๐ฐ THYROXINE (T4) and TRIIODOTHYRONINE (T3)
โโ Control metabolism , regulate body temperature by calorigenic action.
๐ฐ THYROCALCITONIN (TCT)
โโ Controls calcium (Ca++) level in blood , Check osteoporosis .
๐ฐ PARATHORMONE
โโ Maintains proper level of calcium and phosphorus by regulating renal action , thus , controlling calcium and phosphate amount in bones.
๐ฐ INSULIN (from ฮฒ cells)
โโ Stimulates metabolism of carbohydrates. Influences the storage and utilization of sugar , inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis stimulates glycogenesis.
๐ฐ GLUCAGON (From a Cell)
โโ Influences the enzymatic action of phosphorylase , controlling glycogenolysis in tha liver and muscles ; increases the amount of sugar in blood.
Antagonistic to insulin , inhibits glycogenesis.
๐ฐ SOMATOSTATIN(SS)
โโ Suppresses the release of hormones from the pancrease and digestive track.
๐ฐ PANCREATIC POLYPEPTIDE
โโ Inhibits the release of digestive secretion of the pancrease.
๐ฐ ADRENALINE (Epinephrine) and NORADRENALINE (Norepinephrine)
โโ Regulates heart beat , blood pressure , sympathetic nervous system , contraction of involuntary muscles of lung , eyes , gut etc. , Production of blood , flow of saliva and sweat under emotional state.
๐ฐ ADRENOCORTICOIDS
โโ Regulate water and electrolyte balance, regulate fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism; stimulate development of male and female secondary sexual characters.
๐ฐ TESTOSTERONE (leydig's cells)
โโ Affects the normal development and functions of secondary sexual organs and characters in male.
โโ Stimulate formation of sperms
๐ฐ ESTROGEN (graafian follicles )
โโ Affects development and maintenance of secondary sexual characters in female.
โโ Stimulate maturation of ova.
๐ฐ PROGESTERONE ( ovary and Corpus luteum )
โโ Stimulates uterus for pregnancy, implantation and formation of placenta, also stimulates mammary glands.
๐ฐ RELAXIN ( Corpus luteum )
โโ relaxes ligaments of pelvic girdle at the time of birth.
๐ฐ HUMAN CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN or HCG (placenta)
โโ Prevents disintegration of the Corpus luteum and maintains progesterone production.
๐ฐ Serotonin
โโ Helps in vasoconstriction of blood vessels.
๐ฐ MELATONIN
โโ Reduces quantity of FSH and LH, Acts as anti gonadotropic hormone.
๐ฐTHYMOSIN
โโ Regulates growth, stimulates proliferation of lymphocytes and also hastens sexual maturity.
