In response to the U.S. Department of State’s call to report defamation related to the death of U.S. citizens, I hereby submit a formal complaint concerning the U.S. correspondent Elmar Theveßen. In a broadcast by the German public broadcaster ZDF, he legitimized the murder of Charlie Kirk through false claims. Specifically, during the heute journal program on September 11, 2025, moderated by Dunja Hayali, Mr. Theveßen falsely stated that Mr. Kirk advocated for stoning homosexuals—a baseless defamation that constitutes a severe national and international security risk and directly contributed to Mr. Kirk’s assassination on September 10, 2025, in Orem, Utah.

The fake news spread by Ms. Hayali and Mr. Theveßen suggests that Mr. Kirk himself would kill people, namely by stoning homosexuals. These misrepresentations legitimize the murder in the eyes of a million-strong audience reached by the ZDF broadcast. The reason why this represents a national and international security breach is the fact that only one more radicalized individual, like Tyler Robinson, needs to see these lies to become motivated to kill again. Such disinformation fosters a climate of violence and incitement that can facilitate further attacks.
I demand that the United States send a strong signal against violence, hate, incitement, slander, and defamation. Specifically, I call for the expulsion of Elmar Theveßen from the USA as persona non grata. Journalists who regularly—whether deliberately or unconsciously—spread hate and lies beyond the scope of security interests should no longer enjoy U.S. accreditation. This would be a clear signal to foreign media, particularly the publicly funded ZDF, financed by German taxpayers, that the USA will not tolerate such threats to its citizens.
