Well, not using a central server, that is closed-source is way better than giving you open-source client but keeping the server side centralized an closed-source. No?
Well, it is not as easy as you think it is. Milli-device support with encryption is not so easy. Decentralized, blockchain approach, where your account is associated to your key seems to be the best solution.
And how do you think people are supposed to discover each other? You still need some kind of centralized server. So p2p still needs a central connection point and routing otherwise people need to know each others IP and ports, etc. No offense but your suggestion is naive.
Yeah I'm nowhere neer an expert. I just read blockchain. And think "Another hope product" But I'll try it maybe someday in the near future. It does sound interesting
Even though it is interesting, you need a user base. Next to Telegram and WhatsApp it's another app. I have a hard time getting people to use Telegram. Not even attempting Signal or a spinoff like this. It's a win not having to use your phone number, but that easy setup could even bring forth many stale accounts, right. (Having a hard time expressing myself). Because you cou just register a new account instead of the hassle of recovering your own. So is this something for reporters in war countries and such?
You are totally right. I have switched to Telegram ages ago and managed to get everyone I know on it. So I am lucky. I have not used WhatsApp for a year+. This, yet another messenger, is cool for techies I guess. I will not try getting anyone on to it, just people who care. I have a feeling, Telegram will move to a blockchain one day and that will be it. Reporters can use any other messenger I guess. share amount of date and traffic going through the servers is so huge, it is close to impossible to figure out who does what. Even Machine Learning algorithms, that are looking for patterns in data are struggling.
This will be nice for particular groups of people who desire more security, sadly I don't have anyone with whom I will use it for something productive.
But I'll try it maybe someday in the near future. It does sound interesting
