Clear headedness yes, but, a solid plan of action is required to be successful. And it's best to start planning before it is too late. Better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

Good for you, even if that is a meaningless statement. ALL democracy is nothing more than mob rule. You don't avoid these situations, you make them worse. Consider that it wasn't until AFTER the truckers started showing an alternative that public opinion started drifting from government policy. It wasn't until AFTER the government became more and more insane that public opinion dramatically changed. In your "direct democracy" the government would have used mob rule to immediately and thoroughly crush the truckers because it had mod support.

I get that this discussion is getting a bit heated but I think you misunderstood me. In a direct democracy the leaders cant force their agenda on the majority of people who dont really want it. A binding citizen's iniated referendum would be enacted.

Is it getting heated? You misunderstand the concept of democracy and seem to think that a central authority doesn't exist in one, which is the exact opposite of truth. You can also clearly see that while a lot of people didn't rush to comply at first, they quickly folded with very little coercion until those absolutely refusing to obey became an extreme minority. There is NOTHING good about a system that embraces mob rule, ever.

The problem is you are falling into the fundamental fallacy that all despots fall into. If "your side", the "right side", has control, which is rational and never wrong, then everything is okay and everyone will obviously see the wisdom and enlightenment your side has. Reality is never like this. No one ever has such a monopoly on truth to a degree that they should be allowed to rule completely over others.

The founders of the US were afraid of direct democracy, as stated elsewhere, it leads to mob rule.

They established three equal branches of government to balance each other, legislative, executive, and judicial. 

The legislature has the Senate which originally represented state governments and Congress which represented state populations.

The Senate also has a rule that requires 60 out of 100 votes to pass major legislation.
