As sad as this story is, in a way the stubborn naïvité of men is to blame as well. If men were rational in the best sense, they'd manage the courtship of a prospective woman according to the time tested protocol of the Holy Church (I'm orthodox, but the roman-latin church has a similar concept), which forces the man and the woman to abstain from sex before marriage as to not poison ones's perception of the other. Thus man and woman can geg to know each other and find out about the mutual sense of self-denial and of virtue (apart from personal sympathy of course), which is the only possible foundation fora stable, lasting and happy and blissful marriage. And the goal of courtship is not hnattached sex, but marriage of course. Once all of this (and more) practical wisdom gets discarded and anything goes, since nobody has any more knowledge about how to go about such matters, the brakes are off and the course more often than not ends in chaos, bitterness, pain and suffering. Sad but true... Peace! ✌🏻

Yes. Some men are stupid, big turtles, carrying the world on their backs. We put up with entirely too much. I've learned and got better over the years. One need learn where to draw the line--and enforce it.

Why isn't anyone acknowledging that the woman isn't a sex slave for the husband, either? She and he both need to find ways to make things work for both of them and he shouldn't be DEMANDING sex 24/7, if that is what he was doing. If she doesn't want to be with him at all sexually, then they need to see a therapist and find out what is going on. Hopefully he is faithful enough to not abandon her if she has mental or physical issues that are making this impossible for her now.

I don't think counseling will help this marriage. It has been my experience that some couple should never be together. Asking to explore should be a red flag. Husband being ok with wife exploring is another. There are men and women who will not be okay with performing sex with their perspective couple and along come someone new and they're doing what they wouldn't do with their spouse/partner. Counseling only works if both involved are willing to participate and that includes finding out through counseling that the best thing to do is walkaway (Divorce).

I say that because you ignore the fact how 99% of open marriages and relationships are started by the woman, statistically, she wants it, hundreds of millions of women across the world at this point in the last 50 years alone! Dude, are you clueless that statistically 2/3 of people do not marry, for decades now, stats show. And now it is 3/4 or so of relationships never marry, with kids included. And statistics show for decades a much higher success rate for relationships that do not marry, vs marriage.

I am very well aware of that fact, living in a Western country myself.
The issue you are raising is, that the better choice is the option that "works" better/best for someone (i.e. for us males). So this is basically a utilitarian justification. But: That's a logical fallacy. So this argumentation is invalid in justifying the higher "success rate" for RL that are unmarried. This is one of the basic problems of modernity, inherited from the so-called "Age of Enlightenment". So the fallacy is deeply-rooted. But false nevertheless…
